Third, what evidence existed? Afton decided to start by re-reading the articles in the Wing and asking Efrain what he had learned so far. At some point she would also need to talk to Miso. Chapter 35

July 16, 2015 Thursday

“Hello, Davina. Is Efrain in his office?”

“Good to see you, Afton. Yes, Efrain is waiting for you, so just go on in… Wait! Stop! Don’t touch those cookies! Biddie made them. Morris told me Sgt. Skew might visit.”

“Yikes!” Afton pulled her hand away from the cookie platter. “Thanks for the warning!” She meant that wholeheartedly. Afton wasn’t feeling like a cleanse that day.

Once safely inside Efrain’s office, Afton plopped into the familiar chair and stared at her friend. She wasn’t sure that she had forgiven him for referring Myra to her without warning her first.

“Afton, I know you were unsure about getting involved in Myra’s case. I figured that out when you didn’t answer my calls yesterday.”

“You knew that when you told Myra to call me, Efrain. You should have let me know.”

“I did know that. But I didn’t know what else to do. Myra is in a catatonic state and doesn’t seem to be recovering. I’m sorry. I really am. But you did call me back, and you did come. Here you are, right?” Efrain raised his brows and tried to look hopeful. He’d seen the eyebrow tactic work for Ralph; maybe a little canine charm would work for him, too. After all, Afton was a “love my dog, love me” kind of person.

Afton sighed. She was going to do what she could—whatever the consequences. “Okay, Efrain. Where do we start?”

Efrain started by repeating all the reasons Miso had cited for Myra’s arrest: the CSA bags, Myra’s knowledge of horticulture, Julien’s bank records, Myra’s accounts and bank records, Julien’s harassment of Katharine, Julien’s hints about money, and Julien’s apparent stealing. Miso also suspected that Katharine might have been involved and was now in hiding.

“That doesn’t seem like a strong case at all,” commented Afton. She was making notes in a red diary as she talked. “And that’s what I told Myra. I never thought Miso would arrest her without more proof. Now I feel terrible.”

“You were right. The case is weak. And Deputy Miso is a good detective. But…” Efrain paused to consider a delicate way to explain his hanging “But…”

“But Sgt. Skew let me know a little more about how the arrest happened. It seems the sheriff is viewing the evidence through his own peculiar prism of media and politics. Miso had little choice in the matter.

“When Julien’s body was first discovered, the good chief insisted that Julien committed suicide. When the forensic pathologist reported that plant alkaloids were found in Julien’s blood and were likely the cause of death, Sheriff Cannon switched to a conclusion of accidental death.
